Hey, how about a "Design Forum"?

Great idea Paul and you are it(the moderator, that is). I think Joel will set it up tomorrow.

I'm intersted in discussion on the more ancient forms in framing particularly hewing , riving(riveing) and hand splitting shakes. I have completed one frame with hewn timbers. With a need to protect the frame and no ability to do some of this hand work I opted for asphalt roof shingles. I do look forward to stripping them off and replacing them with hand splits. I have done a lot of reading but practical advice from some folks who have been there would be wonderful.

Thanks for the offer. Just musing about a trip across the ocean with a day to spend working wood with my bare hands (well, almost). I'm sure my wife just got a cold chill.

Guessing that eastern US white oak is similar to english oak, what degree of season do you find works best. My experience is that green oak is like rubber near the feather edge, seems sloppy. Also, what variations would you consider acceptable in the thickness at the butt of the shake and the length as well?
