Hello,
Can anyone recommend a good books for a beginner? I have some engineering experience, but would like a book that lays out the basics. After working through this book I'd like to move on to a more advanced book that goes into more significant detail.

Does anyone have any suggestions for books like these?
Thanks

Hi BJC,

It might be polite to provide your name and location such that we can address you properly and tailor our advice to suit your locale.

An excellent "how to" book would be either of Jack Sobon's books :-

Timber Frame Construction (ISBN 0-88266-365-8) or
Build a Classic Timber-Framed House (ISBN 0-88266-841-2).

These address all aspects about layout and cutting a frame plus touch on engineering issues.

Regards

Ken Hume

Looking back to see the way ahead !

Welcome BJC,

I second Ken's request about your location. As for books, try these links:

TF books

Standard for design of TF structures and commentary (free download as well as book purchase option)

Jack Sobon's historic joinery guide (free download as well as book purchase option)

Men,
Thank you very much for your suggestions - both books and otherwise.

I am careful not to give too much personal information over the web to quickly, but can see that this forum is a bit different and very professional. As such I will try to live up to that idea of Southern hospitality in the future begining now with an update of my profile.

Thank you again.
Ben
