I picked up about 1000 pcs of round 1.5" red oak blanks from a custom chair maker who's closing up shop. Instead of burning them in our stove I thought I'd save this nice stock, take a shortcut on pegmaking shocked , and shave them down to size I need... grin
My only concern is with the quality of this material... is it "too processed" (ie. heat treated and/or dry/brittle?) for pegs?
If anyone needs chisel handle stock, LMK....free to the Guild members grin

I think there's some advantage to having the peg stock drier than the timbers - the timber will shrink around the peg and lock it in place. Just keep an eye on grain runout. CB.

Agreed.

Wet timber plus dry dry pegs means tight tight fits.

A good opportunity for drawbore.

Dry pegs and green timber may lead to split timbers.
I would cut them to lenght and soak them in water for a week.
Not only will they shave better but they will shrink again with the timber and they will be more flexable for draw boring.

Just a thought
