I'm interested in learning about timber framing and was wondering if I could get some suggestions on books about the subject. I'm new to woodworking and I'm just gathering my tools. I'd like to learn about the woodworking and design aspect.

Bishop, I recommend "Build a Classic Timber-Framed House" by Jack Sobon. This book contains an introduction to many aspects of timber framing, like history, tree and tool selection, as well as plans and instructions on cutting a traditional hall and parlour house frame.

In my opinion the best book for timber framing is roundwood timber framing this book is best and it provide complete knowledge about tools and good techniques used in timber treatment.

In addition to those mentioned. I like Steve Chappell's book "A Timber Framers Workshop". I would highly recommend you take a typical 5-6 day timberframe class. Most are held from April to June, though there are sometimes ones later in the season. Sign up as early as possible. I don't know who's holding one in the West this year, but I know of plenty in the East and some in the midwest. If anyone knows of a western class, chime in.
