Timber Framers Guild Forums Tools Timber Engineering Methods for fastening Posts to the Deck?

Being that I'm new to the art of Timber Framing I'm going to ask this basic question. I was planning on laying the deck (Framed with I-joists and plywood with blocking under the posts) first and then attaching the timber frame to the deck. What is the best method for fastening the posts to the deck?? I'm not crazy about using L-brackets that I'll have to notch flooring around. Anyone have any suggestions??

you could notch the subfloor and tenon the posts into your blocking, then use a steel strap which would be fastened to the outside face of the post and onto the outside of your floor deck framing.
interior posts would need a different treatment, perhaps just the tenon.

Would the interior posts need to be pegged at the tenons?

Mark do have any CAD framing details for the post to deck connection?

I wouldn't worry about uplift on interior posts, unless your engineer or building inspector tell you to. If you like the post bottom tenon idea, just use stub tenons without pegs on interior posts(stub tenon is around 2" long x 1.5 or 2in thick)
And no, I don't have any CAD stuff, I'm a pencil and paper type....

One way to create a post to deck connection is by making a supporting area out of 2by stock like this:


Then when the 4" or longer tenon is inserted you can peg it off like this:
