Norm: How goes the battle with the round stuff? After exhausting local lore I would look across the channel to your neighbors for some elegant solutions. I think that if you google something like "du trait" you will wind up with a book with the ISBN# 2-85101-041-7. Graphic solutions to most anything, in the French tradition. I would like to see what you are coming up with so stay in touch. Curtis

You may find "The Carpenter's Assistant" by James Newlands very useful, it is a reprint of a Victorian technical manual from Bracken Books, Princess House, 50 Eastcastle Street, London W1N7AP. ISBN 1 85170 933 9.

Thanks for the help .. we have planning permission and I have researched the spiral staircase from the Victoria & Albert Museum where thay have a 300 year old one in the book shop.
Just got back from France where I can get plenty of roof designs ... but stone walls!.
I will check out the reference book .. so the project is still on ... Curtis, when is the French Castle building workshop?
