Timber Framers Guild Forums Training Apprenticeship/Curriculum Degree in Timber Framing

Hi,

Does anybody know which College or University in the USA or Europe offers a degree course in timber framing or a closely related subject ?

For example, Bournemouth University in England offers a Masters Degree in Timber Building Conservation. This course is held at The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum at Singleton, West Sussex.

This is the only 4-year program I know of over here.

in Germany you can attend classes at almost any tradeschool to achieve a journeyman status as a timberframer(1 full time year at school, 2 years apprenticeship with part time school). After 3years in the field you can attend more specialized tradeschools to achieve a masters degree in timberframing or related subjects(2 years of full time school).
I would assume that it would require the knowledge of the language though.

I would have to research which schools offer the master degree if you are interested.

What kind of a weld? Like welding the steel onto the iron on a chisel? It is rather ungracefully for today called a faggot weld. I haven't tried that yet, I bet it is tough.

I have made a few basic timber framing tools, log dogs, "drift" or "hook" pins, and a froe, but it isn't much to look at. I want to learn how to make chisels and slicks, but I am having trouble figuring out how to form and weld the socket.
