Hello all TF friends. I am moving to Big Island Hawaii this summer and want to build a TF Barn and home. I am looking for info regarding local wood type usage for a T Frame. They have much of Eucalyptus robusta Eucalyptus saligna Eucalyptus grandis, some Silvery Oak & Norfolk Pine, Ohia and a few others. I found a good resource on Hawaii forest wood products, but would love anyone's experience or opinions on this. http://www.hawaii.gov/hfciforest/Commodity-Report.doc Any and all help is greatly appreciated. We would love to stay local, but if we need to ship em in, we can try to go that route as a last resort. We are at 1700' elevation, 75in rain annually, strong winds at times. Good stable soil. Have a word with our very own Hawaian timberframer George Kobayashi at georgekob@aol.com (and in the mean time, learn all you can about termites!)
The database also shows guild memebers William Inglis and John Sullivan, both from Kapa'au

Best of Luck! Thank you very much for the reply. I met George at the PA Conference, He imported his Doug Fir and has been away from Hawaii for a long time- working all over , except there. I emailed him first and have not recieved a reply, nor have I gotten a reply from John S on BigIsland..just was hoping someone else had knowledge in the arena. I have considered Port Orford Cedar and to just ship it over, but I want to exhaust my resources first as cost is King right now. Bob

Best of Luck! Oh and by the way, the Termites are still 30-40 miles South of us. But, you are right, I have been studying up on them big time... They are closer to the Port cities and bigger populations, houses, subdivisions... We are in the sticks and NO ONE AROUND!!! ......

Hi there,
One of our dirty little secrets is the appallingly low amount of traffic on this forum. If after all your attempts with no reply, I would contact the business council directly. Nancy Wilkins is incredibly committed to helping people with interest meet people with purpose.

Bob Well Bob , that was a very honest and greatly appreciated comment. I do indeed appreciate your candor. I saw an old post from 2 years ago and did not see a reply, but thought I would take a chance and maybe the forum had grown and matured. I will wait a bit longer and then take you up on the suggestion and contact Nancy. I was amazed and grateful for the warm reception I recieved at the TF Guild Conference in PA recently.
