Timber Framers Guild Forums Tools Tool Forum Nail Gun problem?

Hi Guys, i work in a Timber Frame factory, we use Senco nail guns, the problem we are having is the employees are complaining about hitting knots in the timber, this causes the gun to bounce away from the timber, is there any gun / nails out there that will go through the knot or have you simply got to avoid them? Any feedback will be appreciated.

I think your definition of timber frame and ours may be different. Where are you located?

Avoid them. You have very dangerous stuff going on. Everybody should wearing safety glasses within the area. A ricocheting nail or exploding knot could be a life changer. Conifer knots tend to be violent exploders. You may try predrilling a hole if have to have a fastener in a knot. Protect yourself and coworkers, avoid knots. Having spent my life with one eye I can't express how important protection is. Everybody within several yards of that nail gun should have eye and ear protection. Move safe and live happily ever after. Good luck. And what are you doing with that nail gun in a timber frame shop?

We are actually in a large factory, we specialise in building timber frame panels that form the structure of houses, apartment blocks etc. We do have a very strict Health & Safety policy due to the nature of the job and believe me, our employees are very aware of the dangers as we have had a few nails in hands, through fingers but god forbid no eye injurys. I just wasnt sure if there were any guns/nails on the market that would penetrate a knot. Thanks for the reply, all info is greatly appreciated.

i've been using a MAX nailer... the HN90 i think.
it's a gun that runs off of a 400 psi high presssure system.
we use it for driving into LVL's. it has been successful.
