Timber Framers Guild Forums Tools Tool Forum Framing Chisel Length Question

I am about to buy a 1 1/2" and a 2" framing chisel from Barr Tools. These chisels come in lengths 13" and 17". These will be my first framing chisels so I am wondering what length is more appropriate. I thought I had read somewhere that "the longer the better" but now searching the internet(fox maple...etc) I haven't found anything that talks about what lengths are appropriate. Any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks! eric

I'd go 17. Helps you with mortices both regular and through. I think it also gives you a better sense of driving straight down. Because it is longer, the striking end of the chisel must be further off vertical than a shorter chisel to under cut or overcut by the same angle. You'd have a tendency to be a little straighter with the longer. Even so though, you'll get a feel after some practice and get good and driving straight down, 90 degrees to your ref face. You can get pretty close with some experience. At least you'll make sure you don't under cut the line. You can always parr more off, you can't add it back.

i think brad makes some good points. I would add it depends on how tall you are, how tall are you horses, how big are the timbers you work on average, etc. Point being it helps to have a good striking angle to reduce fatigue and help precision.

As far as the benefits of the shorter chisel, its like choking up on a bat or golf club. more control.

Make sure to get leather covers for them too. You drop one on concrete once and chip the edge and you'll be cussing - I learned the hard way. Barr sells some with belt loop, and Jim Rogers also sells just cover type, which I use. He can direct you to pics of them.
