Wow, thanks for all the responses.
I originally thought of doing a pergola but I really want something to protect from the rain. Instead I built a pergola on the back deck and it looks pretty nice!
As for budget, not sure yet. I'll try the sketchup when i get some time this week and show you what I had in mind.
