Nh. The problem I have with the technique you described is that, when I hew, the ground is almost always frozen solid and mostly rock. to trench down the bunk logs without machinery is probably even more difficult than these other techniques I am pursuing. Most of the time I would fell a tree, buck it and try to position the setup so there would be very little moving of the log to be hewn, as they are heavy and I dont have heavy machinery or assistance. This scenario puts me in a position where I need to be able to do a new setup quickly and at a new fell site each time. tb

I guess that would create a different approach to the setup proceedure, I should have realized that different areas create different problems, I was always hewing in the summer months and had created a hewing area that was fairly free of rocks which was a normal proceedure in the days gone by.
