Timber Framers Guild Forums Tools Timberframe Design Hip rafter cracking

Several hip rafters in my build are splitting at the same point—right where the birdsmouth meets the plate. The photo shows both sides of the worst one. The wood is still green. Is this a problem and should it be remedied in some way?

A simple bolt through top to bottom will hold it together and should stop further splitting.
