Regarding my initial post, am pretty much out of white oak log at the moment but still have a few hundred w.o. octagonal pegs left in various sizes. Got a couple 28"-30" red oak veneer-grade butts in yesterday, so plenty of super nice r.o. peg stock available.
Price structure has changed a bit since first posting:
8" octagonal any diameter -$2.00
10" oct any diameter- $2.25
12" oct any diameter- $2.50
Also, been playing around with shaping red oak pegs split from an 1840's barn tie beam. I know Will suggested material could be put to better use elsewhere, and his point is well-respected/well-taken as always, but the color and grain on these are just so unusual and beautiful. Just thought these pegs might make a cool conversation piece in someone's frame, maybe used only in compression applications?
Remember, you gotta be draw-boring those joints, or these traditional pegs aren't going to do you much good.
I realize the cost of my pegs may be a bit higher than so-and-so, but considering quality of material (these aren't firewood-pile scavenges), and a lot of time spent fussing over each, test-fitting each one and smoothing/final shaping with block plane, IMHO they're worth it. Hope you all agree.
