Sure Tim Reilly, it was really more of a sweeping generalization than a pointed statement.
That said, you bring up some specific points. I also do not discount the initial cost of good quality tools but being something of a cheap bastard would rather pay one time for the tool I know I want. An adze is a robust tool and I think a person could work up to a knowledge of its use unlike good Japanese saws which are absolutely unforgiving of any ignorant abuse. So then it becomes an exercise in equivocation - do I need/want it or not, and why. Anyway price is always a misleading indicator in a capitalist economy.
But come on, you live on the North American continent, we're on the downside of an economic bubble, you have access to e-bay. You should be able to score one for 50 bucks... and it should be laminated.
