I deal with the hook. You get used to it. Maybe you get some slop in your layout but it isn't really that bad (1/32" or so) compared to an error of one inch, 10 inches, or a foot.

Except on short repetitive sticks where I make a story pole or template.

Skip Williams reports that there are several makes of blank and story pole tape measures that can be marked up with a pencil.
