Please see my drawing. I still have a 1/2" (or more) housing going into the post. The dashed line is marked after I set the hypotenuse with my square.
My braces, when cut and installed, look just like yours.
I simply use the long edge of the brace as the reference, mark my start and end, then mark the housing depth along my square and create the shoulder line.
