Timber Framers Guild Forums General General Forum Questions mixing species of wood

Hello, I am considering using Red Oak for the "first floor" members (posts, tie beams, summers, joists, plates) and white pine for the rafters and everything else upstairs. The joinery connecting the two species would be a rafter to tie beam connection. Are there any reasons for not going ahead with this? Any suggestions at all. thanks, Greg

I've read in Jack Sobon books and know from meeting him personally that he has as many as twenty different types of wood in his house frame. And that in the "olden days" they also did this as they used what was available, on site, to build with.
The only thing that could happen that could cause some problems would be different shrinkage rates. But I'm not totally sure about this.
Maybe someone else will post some of their experiences using diffent types of woods in their frames. Good luck with your project. Jim
