MTF,

I used to own the 9.5 version and truthfully I hated it. The 10.0 might be better but I did not even dare to try it. The program was not very untuitive to me and once you got to roof designs or changes it was hopeless. Also it is designed for stickframing.
That is not to say that it can't be modified for timber designs. But I think you might be better of to get the FREE sketchup. That seems to do alright for basic timber frame designs.

Chief Architect basically lets you design a house( that is if you can figure out how to think like the program) including landscape design and interior. Good for building plans and to show your customers. But for timber frames you might have to use something else. Only thing you might be able to use is the 2D-CAD modus.
