I am planning to build a timber frame sauna with a 4 in 12 roof pitch and a 2-3' overhang. Can anyone help me out with how to frame the roof? All the pictures and plans I have seen show the rafters dying into the tie beams, and a high roof pitch.

A step lap joint may be what your looking for. Look at the red book jack sobin did. The shed project has an example.
