I like to check joinery with the side of my chisel as well. This typically works better with my Sorby.
Barr makes custom tools as well. He made a chisel with a "cranked" handle for my friend--the socket came off of the blade at an angle.
Your best bet would be to call him and see what he can do for you.
I would not order from a distributor if I could phone the blacksmith and place the order.
