Hey Randy, I went to the website of Barr Quarton. I copied and pasted this:

Shipping as requested by UPS, or USPS Mail. International orders please call for shipping rates (1.800.235.4452).

I ordered one over the phone and seemed to receive it much faster than those who placed orders with Woodcraft or like stores. I bet he likes phonecalls.

Hope this helps,

mo

It is always best to buy from the maker when you can. smile
I have found Barr and his staff to be quite helpful and accommodating.

FYI,

That company is not selling Barr chisels, but a copy of them.

Does he make traditional looking chisels and slicks, or just the tapered sided ones? I prefer to have straight sides to roughly check the flatness of the work before I break out the straightedge.

I like to check joinery with the side of my chisel as well. This typically works better with my Sorby.
Barr makes custom tools as well. He made a chisel with a "cranked" handle for my friend--the socket came off of the blade at an angle.
Your best bet would be to call him and see what he can do for you.
I would not order from a distributor if I could phone the blacksmith and place the order.

Thanks Whit. I have a several good sources for antique chisels at the moment. It just seemed that if someone was handmaking timber framing tools they would want to make the tools with features as close to original as possible. I have not seen a new chisel or slick that has even a clos resemblance to the ole tools. So often I see people dismiss the gentle curves as mistakes or abuse, when they are the reason they work so well.
