I am refurbishing an old timber frame (4 x 2) bungalow which was sold for demolition. The estate agent had no vision !
I am removing some internal walls and ceilings to create a large living room in the centre, using some big Douglas Fir timbers to take the loads.
I have done a good deal of light timber framing but nothing with timbers of this size. I have some ideas on how I will build the structure but I would be very interested in hints and tips from the trade.
Can anyone recommend a book available in the UK which gives details of the basics of timber framing ?

You could try Building the Timber Frame House, by Tedd Benson & James Gruber, as a how to book, The Timber Frame Home, also by Tedd, how to integrate Timber Frame with todays technology,
Timber Frame construction by Jack Sobon and R Schroeder, the basics of Timber Framing. and lastly Build a Classic Timber Framed House by Jack Sobon, the entire process from start to finish, these are at most librarys, good book stores, or by mail order from Roy Arnold at Needham Market, ra@royarnold.com 01449 720110
or Tim Walton at Carpenter Oak & Woodland Co cowco@netcomuk.co.uk 01225 743 089
