Adjustable Post or column base for concrete

Adjustable Post or column base for concrete - 03/26/08 06:46 AM

I'm looking for a column base that is adjustable, say up to 6 inches high. This base must have hold-down as well as hold-up capability. Column sixes 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 inches

The Simpson Strong-Tie products are not adequate. They do not have enough adjustment capability.

Any Ideas?

With built-in trim? :-)

Are you using the term "trim" to mean adjustment?

If so yes. I want to firmly anchor a column, up and down and side to side. Once the lateral position of the column is set, I need to be able to adjust the up and down movement only.

Thanks,

I think he was making a funny. A posts typically sit on the ground or floor decking. So, if you've got a gizmo that allows you to raise the post as needed, there's going to be a gap at the bottom that would need to be covered with trim, unless you want the gizmo to show.

OK.

Yes the gap will be covered by "trim" or a boot as I call it.

There are some applications in which the term "trim" is used to mean adjustment.

In this case I want there to be adjustment in this device allowing the post or column to be raised up to 6".

Too much lingo to be sorted out amongst the the trades.

Thanks for the heads up.

The log builders must have something along this line. Why are you looking to adjust a post up and down? Tim

timberlinx has a concrete fastener with height adjustment and hold down/up, give them a call and see how much adjustment they can get, good folks.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the link.

The Log Home Post Levelerâ„¢ may be just the trick to adjust my columns. They have 8" of adjustment.

Thanks

Hi Tim,

sometimes we send columns out to locations for which we don't have exact elevations. These columns will placed on a concrete slab.

Jonathan,

Our solution is to cut the post feet to length on site after we shoot the elevations of each post location and any benchmark or existing/adjacent structure we're working to/from and calculate each one's variation from a theoretical zero.

The survey takes one guy just a few minutes now that we have a rotating laser.

Sometimes if the site is close and the deck/slab is ready, I'll go out a few days before we finish cutting the frame and layout for the posts and shoot the elevations and bring the info back to the shop where we then layout and cut the post feet and do any prep for the connection to the floor/foundation.

Gabel,

I agree with your solution, however we are often not able to go to the installation site before or during the installation.

We may be relying on an installer or owner that may not be well versed in shooting elevations. They may not even know how to use a spirit level. So...in order to have a good installation result, we send our pergola columns with a leveling device. I am interested in improving that device.

Thank you.

Jonathan, why not cut the post to length on site? Just curious, I do find these items intriguing. I add them to my theoretical tool box for later use, when a situation arises. Tim

Hi Tim,

The columns I am speaking of are for pergolas that we send to customers we may never see. The columns must be adjustable for the customer to install them selves.

Thanks for your input.

Hi -- The log post leveler from that store will not do "hold down," which was one of the requests. I am unable to add a photo to this post for some reason, contact me and I'll email you a photo of a "screwjack" with hold-down and hold-up abilities.
