Hemlock stair treads

Hemlock stair treads - 03/23/12 09:59 PM

A client would like wooden stair treads on a metal stairs coming down from upper deck. My sawyer has recommended Hemlock as a good
local choice. The treads will be tapered from 7 to 14 inches wide, 42 inches long and 2 inches thick heart free.
The hemlock will be supplied green so do they need to be dried first or can they be installed green? Also does Hemlock tend to
split when air drying at 2 inches thick.
I have no experience with this wood.
Thanks folks.

Hi Thane, the local hemlock I deal with is prone to shakes. The growth rings come apart ending in raised grain with wicked ugly splinters possible. If the hemlock in your area is strong I would imagine it would be fine.

As to the shrinkage, I dare not venture an opinion.

Hi Thane, I had used Hemlock stringers and treads for the stairs in my barn. Stringers were 4"x12", treads were 3" by 11". All rough sawn. Stairs have been up a couple of years now and there hasn't been significant shake. The treads are housed in the stringers which helps. The timbers used in the barn are Hemlock as well, shake hasn't been much of a problem.

I'm not a full time timberframer, I do it as a hobby. Built the "Sobon" shed and a 28' x 36' barn with a 12' x 36' shed addition. Have volunteered my services with other timberframers just to get practical experience. I've noticed that some timberframers are very negative about Hemlock while others use it exclusively. Not real sure why, perhaps one bad experience with it and you resign to never using it again?
