white oak and aluminum

white oak and aluminum - 01/13/15 03:43 PM

We did a outdoor screenroom in white oak a few months ago. The contractor is wondering about using an aluminum railing system, and potential corrosion. I'm thinking that's not going to work, in particular because the wood will continue to get wet. Any thoughts? Would the aluminum be OK if it was (hypothetically) inside?

I don't have any firsthand experience with Al corrosion and wood, but I did find a few references in a Google search. How many attachment points are there, and can they be somehow protected from the oak?

I found that same link, and it says it's a no go. There are quite a few posts, so it'a fair number of connections. I suppose they could be isolated though. Here's the roof pre-assembled, sans posts:

I saw that roof on your website poking around yesterday. Is that the white oak that I re-sawed? That is a neat design.

Yup, that's the same white oak. It was for Wolfworks (http://www.homesthatfit.com/) in Farmington, CT. All wood off of the owner's property.
