Auger bits for boring machines? - 12/16/01 10:39 PM
Does anyone have a source for large auger bits like the ones used in old-fashioned boring machines? I'm looking for 1/2" shank, 8"+ long bits in 1 1/2" and 2" sizes.
Thanks in advance.

Dave, You can find old "T" augers at flea markets or in antique shops. I have found a lot this way and paid as little as $7.00 for some bits and up to $24.00. It is a shame that you have to cut off the handle an waste a beatiful antique. I just found a 2" auger after looking for a year and spent about an hour sharpening it and it works great. Also try Northern Safety 1-800-631-1246. Good luck, John

I'd watch eBay. As John points out, bits from the old T-Handle augers can be made to work, and you see those go by fairly often. CB.

Some of the machines will work with the modern Milwaukee augers with a hex shank but hand augers are a great suggestion.

I managed to find some at
www.myoldtools.com, but they were expensive. If you're willing to pay $1000 for a boring machine, its the place to go.
