Allowabe Shear Stress in Oak Pegs

Allowabe Shear Stress in Oak Pegs - 03/27/00 02:11 PM

I was hoping someone could tell me the allowable shear stress for commercial oak pegs used for joinery. I would rather not buy a whole book to find this one piece of data. My standard reference books show a shear strength of 125 lbs./sq. in. Instinct leads me to be believe this critical joining item is available in higher shear strengths. If not oak are there better woods for pegs?

I am a retired mechanical PE helping on a timeber frame garage. My friend has a large assortment of timber frame technical literature but this item is lacking.

Thanks in advance. Ted

Your best bet is to download Dr. Dick Schmidt's peg report from the "Members Only" portion of this web site. The report gives the results of research quality shear tests on oak pegs. And the report is free.
