types of timber

I need information on types of timber used in construction and furniture design. I need to know the properties of these timbers i.e strength, dexterity, grain, heat resistance etc. I would be very happy if you could provide information which could help my research, especially internet based info.

A good reference book is R. Bruce Hoadley's Understanding Wood. Also the Wood Engineering and Construction Handbook may be helpful. Unaware of any web info, someone else may have an answer. Some place to start
