tree hieght measuring "stick"....

Greetings,

I saw the old timers had a "stick" (ruler like) that they would sight the hieght of a tree by.

They stood X distance from the tree and held the stick out at arms lenght and sighted the top of the tree with the device.

Question # 1. What's it called.

Question #2. How do I get the info to make me one!

Hmmmmmm. Had to answer my own question.

"Cruising stick"

pace off 50' from the tree and sight the hieght.

At to the increments...I am still working that out. As I fell trees, I measure them on the ground and mark that on my stick.
62' is my tallest mark, so far.

A Biltmore Cruiser Stick is what your were looking for. It's available through Bailey's at Baileys-online.com item #55s.
You hold it at 25" from your eye and site the tree. The catalogue says it will measure standing trees to 144' and also will do diameters. Good luck, Jim
