Timber Frame Course June 2001 - 04/21/01 06:59 AM

Please note that my 2001 Timber Frame Course will be held at the Permaculture Centre located in East Meon, Hampshire between the 23rd June and 1st July. This course is aimed at beginners and we will be working with sweet chestnut converted on site to produce a small demonstration timber frame building. We will be camping on site but will have the use of toilets, showers and restaurant facilities in the sustainability centre. Places are limited with only 2 currently remaining. East Meon has many medieval timber frame buildings dating from as early as 1350 and opportunities to explore same feature in the agenda. Course costs £150. Book now !

The take up for the course has been so good that I have had to draft in extra teaching help. Tom Musco of Royalston Oak Timber Frames, Mass. will also attend and teach aspiring timber framers. Tom has built over 100 frames in his 25 years in the business.

We can probably still accomodate one or two late comers. Call me on 01256 881344.

The course was a sucess and pictures of the event have now been added to our website at :- http://www.clik.to/WorldofWood

The sweet chestnut timber quality was disappointing. This was mainly due to inaccurate conversion using a woodland based tractor driven saw bench which had no dogging facility resulting in non square, tapered and curved scantlings. A decision was made to abandon using square rule and instead the frame was laid out and assembled using French scribe rule (centre lines and offsets). The final result was very creditable for beginners.
