Boring Machine Recommendations?

Boring Machine Recommendations? - 05/28/03 04:32 AM

I am wondering if anyone has a recommendation to give on hand-powered boring machines. I used one during a Guild workshop in Colorado some years ago, but don't recall the brand name. I read a listing on Ebay that said Miller Falls machines are preferred by timber framers. There seem to be several different brands in a variety of styles. I'm interested in buying a machine to use for traditional timber framing (primarily drilling out mortises). I would like one that has an adjustable angle and depth stop. I would really appreciate some advice from people who have experience using boring machines. Thanks!

I found one but it wasn't labeled, as to who made it. But I got it anyhow. I took it to a timber framing course and the instructor told me it was a James Swan Company from CT. It doesn't angle but that can be overcome using an angle block under the base. It doesn't have a traditional depth stop, but I solved that by just clamping on a wooden block to stop the slide at the right height. So, my advice to you is, if you find one and it doesn't have everything you want, buy it anyway, you might not find what you're looking for and you can always sell it later if you do. Good luck with your search. Jim
