Roof Beams - 10/28/06 01:37 AM

Will 6x12 yellow pine beams support SIPS over a 16 foot span spaced 5 feet. They are supported by 8x8 beams on 8x8 posts aand are sloped 1 to 8

There is not an easy answer.
There are lots of facts that come into play.
Wind load of your area, any snow load (if any) thickness and weight of sips.
You could try asking your sip company for help, or you may need to find a structural engineer in your area who can help you.
Good luck,

Thanks Jim That was kinda broad Let me get more setailed. I guess I,m trying to find the formula and values for figuring this but would like a "ballpark estimate" by some experienced TF's. I'm recyling the SIPs so they are mostly for insulation and I plan to use a lot of screws so they should help stiffen the frame.
I'm in south Georgia so no snow load
The beams are hand cut yellow pine 8x12 the 12 up and down of course.
They are to be supported by an 8 foot wall on one end and a ten foot wall on the other the walls are 8x8 yellow pine with a 8x8 header
most appear to me to be at least no 2 maybe no 1
the support area is 8 incehes wide the actual span about 15 feet
all they need to hold up is the sips and some tin and 2x4s but since I'll be sleeping under them I would likje to check before I erect HEHE
all to is bolted together with angle iron as a connecter
If anyone can point me to the formulas and values I'd appreciate it.
and if anyone think this could fall on my butt please email me lol

Without knowing a bit more information from you about the roof structure, and other loading information, it is difficult to give you an exact answer. This forum is probably not appropriate for too much discussion about a project specifics (rather it should be for generalities that can be applied to others).

But, generically speaking, a 6 x 12 #2 SYP spanning 16' spaced 5' o.c. can carry sips and standard roof live and dead loads.

Good luck with the project,

Joe

Thanks Joe, Appreciate it. Just the info I need. I was more or less interesting in common practices. Got the first beam up (its a shed typre roof) and jumped up and down on it while tied in to a tree( for safety) and the 8x12 held up without much flexing actually. The actual span was only about 14 feet 6 inchs > I found several formulas but cun't maske head nor tails of them lol. If my 200 lb self can jump on it without much deflection I think it'll hold. Sorry to post such a specific item to the forum
