Kanna, chisels and saws - 10/14/12 11:31 PM

Hello,

I tried Japanese kanna this weekend, and I am not planning to buy a few. Any recommendation what I should look for? I want one for rough and one for fine work and maybe one for in between. All to be used for timber framing. I may also look for more chisels, and some saws. I have a few but may look for specialized chisels. and one extra saw. I also welcome advice on these. Santa will be shopping soon.

Hi Serge,

Buy your smoother which will be in the neighborhood of 70 mm and maybe even one you keep for rough work, complete. But then get a Dai blank and separate blade and make your own kanna. It's very good practice all laid out well in Odate's book. I have always wanted to try a kanna smaller than the smoothers, closer to 50 mm. You'll maybe want the bottom conditioner to go along with them.
