Actual axe conversation

Actual axe conversation - 01/06/07 05:15 AM

Hello fello axe thowers! Recently there was a discussion regarding favorite broadaxes, adzes, etc., being used for hewing, but I can't find it. Anyone help me out? Or care to add on to this post?

Also, when you're looking at an axe with a left hand or right hand bevel, I assume that these designations are given with the axe in the user's hands at use.... That is, if I were comfortable hewing with the timber on my right side, the flat side of the axe would be on the right, thus creating a left bevel broadaxe??? Sorry, this could sound confusing.

Also, favorite weights of broadaxes???

Thanks in advance,
Brock

What is this axe thing you speak of? And why are you posting this here?
laugh
Hey, Brock!
Well, I've been scouring the forum as well, cause I know which thread you're talking about..Tool Forum..? I think....

You have some good questions.
This sounds like a job for....The NORTHERN HEWER...da-dada!!
I don't know if he'll make it down here, though - we could also put an APB out on Mark...

Now, now, Derek.
Be nice, he's just straying a little, that's all.

Sheesh.

Derek, did you have a bad day? Did the neighbours dog poop on your back door step this morning?

Re: Actual axe conversation - 01/06/07 07:03 AM

Is axe throwing just a game?
Could one try it in, say, hunting...?

I think my viking ancestors may have done so...

Typical viking day with axe: hew a house, hunt some reindeer, and then chop off the heads of the bastards trying to take it all from you...

Note to self - never borrow (and not return) anything from TG.

Hey TG, I bet I can really wind Derek up if I create a new post down here asking about load calcs and timber sizing... laugh

That's so sad...I thought I heard a cracking timber in there saying, "no, this isn't the way I want to go..."

Indeed. I've watched it a few times. Kinda stunning.

But here's a feel good video to cheer us all up.

Re: Actual axe conversation - 01/06/07 07:37 AM

My upper body musclature became highly developed shortly after the holidays. A guy at work told me today that I looked like Will Ferrell, and I'm not sure how to take that.

Hey Moderator, I think Derek is in the sauce again. He's telling us about his extreme upper body strength. Are you allowed to drink and post?

Hey TG, any progress on the shed?

Re: Actual axe conversation - 01/06/07 07:43 AM

Mind you, I like to joke with the guys at work and tell them that when I started there I was a 'B' cup..

(I'm actually substantially more than that, so the joke is pretty funny, see... )

Shed: waiting for my friend to decide what style she wants.
Booze: I thought I was the one who just confessed to drinking and posting?

Re: Actual axe conversation - 01/06/07 07:47 AM

Well yeah, I fessed up too, but I was just trying to take some of the heat off us and place it on the guy with the dog pooh on his shoes.

Geez, this 'Actual Axe Conversation' sure went for a downward spiral, huh?

Re: Actual axe conversation - 01/06/07 08:00 AM

I just felt a stiff, cool breeze part my hair. I heard the wind whisper something about a bucket of water, super powers and blah.

You're right. I'm but a wee baggins.

The typing thing is funny though, cause I got a 'flood warning' that said I have to wait at least 60 seconds between posts, so maybe TG can be the bucket of water?

Are you guys gonna fill me in or what?

Re: Actual axe conversation - 01/06/07 08:03 AM

...ah...no, but TG invited me to the dark side once. Or was that you?

Doesn't even ring a bell actually...

Should I be embarrassed?

Re: Actual axe conversation - 01/06/07 08:15 AM

What can I say. Doesn't even ring a bell. I was nine when the show was terminated. I lived in the country, and we had 'last choice' cable. Snow and news. So instead of watching TV, my brother and I used to sneak over to the school bus yard and jam dirt, potatoes, sticks and ? into the tailpipes of buses and watch them try and start in the morning.

BTW, Where is Daisy duke in the super friends posters?

This is a real milestone. 2 pages of conversation in Axe Throwing!! High Five!! It's all mindless babble, but 2 pages all the same.

Well, Brock, I'm sure you have your super heroes that we'll never know.
Maybe someone not from TV?

Heck yeah. Levin, Sobon, NH, Rogers, Benson, Daiku, Benson, Christianson, Chappell, and so many others. These guys are the ones making sure that timber framing lives.

Oh yeah, and the school bus mechanic.

Re: Actual axe conversation - 02/11/07 09:46 AM

Awlright, Derek,

Is bogus what a guys find in his nostrils if he goes a lookin?

I feel compelled to answer the original question, about broad axes and previous posts. I bookmarked a few:
http://www.tfguild.org/ubbcgibin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=22;t=000067#000012
http://www.tfguild.org/ubbcgibin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=000072
http://www.tfguild.org/ubbcgibin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=18;t=000018
http://www.tfguild.org/ubbcgibin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=11;t=000076

It's fun joking around, but it's a lot more fun using some old axes. If anyone has any new thoughts or experiences on hewing, I'd love to hear.

Best,

Zach
