Gable overhang

If one were not using panels on a roof, could you use the roof planking to provide a one foot(or more) overhang on gable ends or would you need to have some more framing(structural ) support for this, if so how is this accomplished? For clarity sake I am thinking in terms of a common rafter roof on a tie-below the plate-continouous top plate frame with rafters spaced at 4 feet, 1.5 "planked, furring strips, and standing seam metal roofing( no insulation, no sips). tb

You could probably get away with one foot. Another option is to have the panel company leave pockets in the top of the roof sip, where you can insert 2x4s that then cantilever out to be the rafter tails that support the overhang. I've done this, and it's a PITA compared to just cantilevering the SIPS themselves out to form the overhang. I think you can go 2 or 3 feet with the latter method, as the SIPS are so stiff. CB.

1.5" planking should overhang more than two feet. The barns around here overhang 16-24" with 1" boarding, I have rarely seen problems in that area. You could help the situation by running a wide furring strip at the edge of the gabel.

Your outlookers, as we call them, will be much stronger if connected at the end to a substanial (inch and half or more) fascia or subfascia/fascia combo, rather than just the fat metal roofing gable flashing.

Thanks guys. Zach, for the eaves I was just going to step lap the rafters and have 2- 4" of rafter tail extend out about a foot for support of roofing and add a fascia to the ends of the tails and planking. Does this sound right? Mark do you mean to run the wide furring strip at the edge of the frame gable or the overhang edge? I think with purlins it is easy to just extend the last bays' purlins lapped over the rafters out for support, but I wonder if there was a similar strategy people would use on a common rafter roof . Zach, I definitely would attach a fascia to the ends at the gable overhang as well. I still cant figure out what a sub fascia if for?Is it just a finishing, aesthetic detail?Derek what is a barge rafter? tb

I meant the overhang edge, but Zach's idea is better, less steps to get the job done. Subfascia is usually rough framing(2x) and finished fascia is usually 1x. In the gabel overhang situation, you should only need a good looking 2x fascia.
