Cool German? barn in Missouri

Check this barn out. One of the coolest I have ever seen in America.

What a stoutly built barn. Looks like something right out of a picture in Richard Harris' book. The stone infill and exterior wall framing look very European. The inside w/ the curved braces resembles a cathedral.

Too bad they didn't suggest a date of construction (if they did I missed it).

Would have liked to have seen some of the roof framing, too.

I am curious if the curved bracing had any circle geometry involved in them, it looks close, and the close bent spacing hints at it too.

Someone needs to take a large compass and swing an arc from the center of the bay to see if it swings along the curved bracing.

What do you think of that, Don?

10 minutes later I have printed out a photo of a shot of the frame( about 3/8" into the progress bar) and a daisy wheel lays nicely over the bracing. I am surprised at how well it fits, as the camera angle was taken from the floor level, perspective.

From the sound of the fellow shooting the video the barn is coming down.

I agree the braces look circular.

I wonder if the stone nogging in the front gabel was related to the rooms in the first bay (grainarys? and the nogging helped to keep the vermin out.

Dave, do you have Apple's "Quicktime" video player installed?

Try that for playback. It's free. I don't think Windows Media Player or Realplayer will work as an Apple format is what the web site owner selected for posting/viewing.

Is "arching" a way to determine brace length? I remember in an old thread someone was asking about a rule of thumb for determining brace length. Someone said one-third of the post's length...Swinging an arch sounds like it would give very nice (natural) proportions, something this German barn certainly has.

can anyone with the PRO version of Quicktime, save it and post it in MPEG? I'd like to add the vid to my library but can not save from Quicktime's free ver.

I had audio only, then I updated my quicktime, and that worked.
