Rafter layout - 03/27/13 04:55 PM

24x24 barn.
8 or 9" pitch with a collar tie.

I'm looking for timber size and layout options (no purlins....I don't think)

Thanks!

I'm being dumb, but...? Do you want to buy this, build this, have this built, looking for a design? Tell us more please.

Re: Rafter layout - 03/27/13 10:45 PM

I'm building it.
I have always used rough sawn common rafters in the past (16"oc).

I'd like something with more meat and a greater visual appeal.
Purlins aren't out of the question but I'd like to crawl before I try to walk, so to speak.

Also, I'd like to be able to put it together on the ground and lift it with a crane which another reason for the question.

the point being, this is difficult to do over the internet...
lots of variables. including the stuff i listed, but also things like what the plate sizes are, how you are holding the building together, snow load, wind load, etc.

you'd be better served by working with someone local - engineer, building department, timber framer, etc. to help you do this.

lots of folks here can help you sort out HOW to do this, if that is what you might be interested in (and lots of references for that online as well as in print).

Hi Berry,

I didn't, (and still really don't,) know what to say, thanks to Mike, I don't think I have to now, (thank's Mike.) You just have too many unknowns to know where to start, and now I believe you are outside my design requirements, in as such, I would never facilitate a frame with out over hangs, for one point. Sorry, if we aren't giving you what you need, but I'm afraid we need more from you, before we could be of any real aid.

Maybe this will help...
Plates are 8x8 rafters as pictured are 6x8 (pine) approx. 3'11" oc. This is where I think I need something either bigger or closer together. This is just a preliminary idea. Collar ties will be installed and I'm thinking a 1/2 lap rafter, ridge is an option.

Hi Berry,

You are on your way, I can see what you are thinking now, and the style you are working can be a challenge, both in design and aesthetics. I am a member of the TFG and love it, but I think you will get more of a broad range of feedback from the timber wrights, (me included) if you join the Forestry Forums Timber Frame and Log building section. It is a larger community with a range of skill base from zero to master timber wrights.

Re: Rafter layout - 03/29/13 07:10 PM

Is the attic one large space, no wall, say, splitting the room into 2 rooms?

The biggest issue I see is spread of the wall. It can work and I have seen it work in older barns for many years. I also have seen failures most likely due to the spreading issue. As Mike eluded to, have you considered a ridge beam and supporting post?

The collar beams are not ties and won't do a whole lot to keep the spread at bay.

I believe your rafter size is fine. and you just have to love metal roofing!

Now go over to the ff for more opinion. And while your over there tell the guy with the bodger type shaving horse to put a removable shim on the rest for adjustments, I think he is from Norway. Or the clamping bar can be made rectangular, rotating it can give some adjustment as well.
