ca. 1744 home - 07/02/14 07:04 PM

Help. I am on a local Historic Commission. Our town has received a demolition permit for the third oldest extant home ca. 1744 on one of 25 original land grants that created town of Stoughton, MA. Home is in disrepair, we are invoking demo delay of 60 days while our commission searches for solutions. Likely not staying put re: owner's "as of right" and cost to repair. Can this OLD frame be dismantled and saved? Can we help a revolutionary war soldier's history remain standing? I can be reached here, or at ghagerty@usart.com or at 781-856-2635. Time is running out. Thank you for any help or advice!

I'm a bit surprised a late Colonial Period home is the third oldest building in a town in your part of Mass...

Time is your issue both in pulling such an effort together logistically and in limiting the ability to raise the funds necessary to move it for either storage or emplacement.

Perhaps a quick Kickstarter for funding and a media campaign to raise local interest.

I've both moved buildings as units, and of course have dismantled historic frames for repair and reassembly, and will send you an e to ask after photographs to offer an opinion as to the complexity of either option.

Hi Beetle, wish you all the luck...Will is a good person to talk to.

We as well do this type of vintage restoration for a living...feel free to call. I also know others in your area, and groups that can give advice.

Good Luck,

Hi Folks, we are making some progress in saving this home.
See today, 8/7/14 Boston Globe article. Several repliers have seen more detailed pictures of the interior and ridge/eavelines and feel the home is not in such disrepair and could, can and should be saved. I can provide this data to anyone else wishing to assist us in saving the structures. email me at "ghagerty@usart.com"
