How do you drill 1/4 dia holes straight? #477 05/14/03 01:06 AM

I sure like those hardened screws but drilling straight for them is kinda hard. Anything over 4" or so and it's a guess where it might come out. I've tried augers and twists with the same results. I suspect the solution is to use bigger fasteners and avoid andthing but consistent grain but if anyone has a trick I'm dying to hear it.

There are many and various jigs that I have seen fashioned out of two pieces of wood at a right angle with the instersection left open so you have a V. You hold this fixture up to your drill and use it to get yourself started straight. I've mostly seen these used with 3/4 and 1" auger bits for peg holes. Hope this helps.
