Hi, I'm planning on building a 20' x 30' English style timber frame barn, but have been unable to find plans. I have some books by Jack Sobon that are very useful, but making a set of plans from scratch is a bit beyond my capabilities. Does anyone know where I can buy detailed plans showing the joinery and would come with a detailed material list. The dimensions could be different, but I would like something about that size. Thanks

Welcome Armchair,
You posted in the right place. There are plenty of folks here that can provide you with what you seek. I imagine you will have folks contacting you shortly.

Hi;
I am not aware of plans and material lists for "English" barns.
I plan to finish a 1/5 scale model of a 30'6" x 36' English barn that is a replica of an existing barn in my town. The model is fully timber framed and uses 3/16" dowels for pegs! I went and measured some key dimensions, the timber sizes and took some photos and built the model without making plans. This was possible for me because I have many years experience restoring and building frames so I knew what to do.
I would be willing to give you the critical information to design an English barn, but this would not be a set of plans.
Where are you?
Jim

Jim: I'd be happy to draw a plan from your model....

Hi Jim, Sorry for the late response. I didn't see your message until now. Sounds like an interesting project. I'm outside of Montreal, Quebec. Thanks for the help. Shawn

Armchair, I posted something similar...except I am aiming for a house proper http://www.tfguild.org/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showthreaded&Number=24954&#Post24954I have noted that some reclaimed barn specialists make detailed plans of their de-constructed barns for the obvious necessity of rebuilding them. You might be able to make a deal and buy the plans from them, in lieu of buying the reclaimed barn proper. I see these sellers around the net, and sometimes on ebay. Lots in Indiana, Ohio etc where there are barns galore.... cheers Drew
