I have been using Barr chisels with good results for a while now. I am looking to get a couple new chisels to back up my old Barr chisels and I thought maybe try Japanese style. I have always heard great things about Japanese chisels and I have used a Japanese slick before and found it to work really nice. Does anybody have a reputable source they would share for 1.5" and 2" Japanese timber frame chisels? thanks tb

Hi.

If you are interested in framing chisels, here are some stuff of our work.

Images can be seen here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/64220150@N06/sets/72157628053079505/with/6364228295/

We are hand forging (by hand hammers) timber framing tools from 9260 spring steel.

The blade is hand forged, hardened and differentially tempered.

The hardness of the blade varies from Rockwell 63-64.

For anti rust, the steel has been threaten using traditional mixture of beeswax, linseed oil and turpentine.

Handles are hand lathed from elm tree and then linseed oiled and bees waxed.

Chisel dimensions:

9 1/2 " - Blade
4 " - Socket
5 " - Handle
18 1/2 " - Overall

Slick dimensions:

15 1/2" - Blade with socket.
17 1/2" - Handle
33" - Overall

And here are some feedback from carpenters:

Hi Jacob

The tools arrived last Thursday so thanks for that! Regarding to tools themselves and their performance, firstly I am absolutely delighted with the corner chisel both in performance and the overall feel of the tool!

The quality of your tools is excellent and I will certainly recommend you to other carpenters!

Jacke/UK (Framing Chisels)

Jacob,

I received the chisels today and and extremely pleased with my purchase! I plan to purchase the 1" corner chisel soon and maybe the 1" chisel.

Kind regards,

Kirk/USA (Framing Chisels, Framing Slick)

Hello my friend!

An axe has arrived today, it's wonderful!
Great quality and design, awesome ornament on blade and accurate leather work.
Many thanks!

George/Russia (Squaring axe)

Jacob,

Chisels arrived. Quite perfect and very beautiful. Used them the day they arrived. I like the unpolished finish, the weight and balance, the handles. I liked everything. Thanks! One of my co-workers uses Barr but was intrigued with your product.

Best wishes to your tool making crew.

Jeff/USA (Framing chisels)

Jacob,

the chisels just arrived! the steel is high quality. made some practice cuts and the edges held up nicely. will start using the tools next week on my cabin project.

Sandor/USA (Framing Chisels)

Jacob,

Wow! tools just came in.

Really nice, I'm very impressed.

Can't wait to use them.

Thanks, and if you ever need a referral for future customers, I'd be happy to let people know the excellent quality of these tools.

Have a Merry Christmas,

Eric/USA (Framing Chisels and Framing Slick)

Not necessarily stones but buffers. I am growing more fond of my leather strop with compound applied to work the wire off the edge. These guys are using power buffers if I am not mistaken?
