Hello,

Im designing a simple bent (3 posts, scarfed plate, knee braces) to support porch roof rafters that will be ties into the wall of my small cabin. I intend to cantilever the Hemlock 8x8 plates by 21" past the ends of the posts. They will have 1 or 2 rafters above them on this cantilevered part, and will still have a roof above them (aka will be still be protected).

This will be in Western Massachusetts. Expected roof load of around 65 psf, and roof pitch yet undetermined, but will likely be around a 4:12.

Any thoughts? It seems allowable in my calculations.

Thanks!

Dan:
It's hard to comment without seeing all the calculations to determine if you have figured everything into the solution.

Whatever you do, have fun doing it!

Yep, that makes sense Jim. Maybe I'll get around to putting those specifics up here soon.
Thanks!

Dan,
You need to know the load per inch on the plate, not the load per sq.ft. This is calculated based onload/sq.ft., the span and spacing between plates. What Jim says.
Grade of hemlock is also needed.

There is an old barn up the road from me that has been falling down
Over the last 20 years. For about a year there was half a roof section cantilevered I would quess about 15 ft supported by the plate and roof strapping. I thought it was amazing that it lasted as long as it did including snow load last winter. A couple of months ago a major wind storm in the area removed the overhanging roof.
This thread made me just think of that barn.

Life is short so put your heart into something that will last a long time.
