Hey all,

Does anybody have experience cooking their own oil? That is, creating oxidized or polymerized linseed/tung oil? I don't like the toxic additives used in products sold over-the-counter.

thanks

Hello,

I hope you don't mean literally cooking your oil, but here is some I have made up here at home.

Flax plant growing out back here.
And after harvest.

Seeds threshed & hulled.

Then it goes to the neighbor with the press and comes back like this.

Rendering is next.

Finally, 1 or 2 years standing in a sun exposed windowsill will bleach it nicely.
Three versions:
left, your store bought boiled linseed oil, middle, my cold pressed linseed oil from the press and right, my home processed, home grown linseed oil.

Greetings,

Don Wagstaff

Wow! So cool Don! Thanks for the pix. My wife and I are looking to produce some of our own oil as well. How much space do you have dedicated to Flax seed crop and how much oil do you get? Canola grows well here, but doesn't have the health benefits...

Back to topic. Yes, I understand that heating the oil to 400-500 degrees w/o oxygen will polymerize the oil and create a better finishing oil for the wood (as well, heating WITH oxygen will oxidize and also produce a cool product). However, it is hard to find true "boiled" oil over the counter...so thinking of doing it myself.

Landark NW and Tried and True both sell clean versions of linseed oil. I've used both and would recommend both.

I heard mixed reviews, though cannot verify it. Its easy for me to find boiled linseed, but not raw. I read recommendations for the raw stuff. I use land ark nw (now heritage finishes. There lin. is non-polymerized. I use their blend, used it today.
