So as I am in the process of buying 7.5 acres of thick woods, I began reading up on timberframing. I like the idea of building a house that could last 100 years or more. As I talk all the time about timberframing (even pointing out TF and PB buildings on TV and movies), my dad finally asked if I had found out if the county I am building in will allow them. I have been putting off asking for fear of hearing the same answer they gave for composting toilets. "No way, no how!!!"

So, how do I ask the planner/inspecter if they will "allow" or "approve" of TF structures, without leading them into an easy "No!"?

Is it as simple as explaining my plans for frame and SIPs, and asking if they will support a permit for such a structure?

Jim in CA

Jim,
CA is a fun place to meet code challenges. Depending on your soil, seismic exposure or risk, rain/snow, wind load and local codes your best route is to start with a structural engineer licensed for CA.
You need a shopping list for the design.
There are lots of gorgeous TF homes in CA most of which resist the forces of nature very well.
good luck,
deralte
