I'm having a discussion with some other framers and notice there is a wide range of opinions on how much draw bore is appropriate in a variety of conditions (hardwood vs. softwood, green vs dry/antique, round pegs vs. octagon or tapered or riven, etc.). I think everyone who uses draw bores would find the range of opinions interesting.
By the way, the discussion was born out of a plan to make draw bore marking tools.
Thanks.

I forgot to mention- I'm looking for MORE opinions. How much draw bore do YOU use- 1/16"? 3/32"? 5/64"? 1/8" The more opinions, the better.

Hi Dan,

We just built with some cypress. 4 inch tenons drawbored 1/8 of an inch. It pulled it together extremely tight. Almost too tight. I think maybe one tenon "popped". Oh yea 1" pegs. Can't remember what wood the pegs were. I'll find out and come back and edit.

1/8 in softwood, less in hardwood, more like 1/16.

1/8 to 3/16. I think the offset is really pretty forgiving as long as you have the right peg which is a tapered riven octagonal oak peg. 1" is a pretty big peg and will pop a tenon if your not careful. On the flipside, you can probably drawbore a quarter with semi green 3/4" pegs.

I don't like to drawbore dry doug fir, but I'll do about a strong 1/16th. (luckily it doesn't come up often)
