I have recently decided that in building a small 20 by 30 foot workshop, that I would prefer to hew all or most members of the frame. I have some trees available to me already and plan to fell, hew and use those in the frame and since those will be hand hewn , it seems to be that the rest of the frame should also be hewn. It is a small frame and I do quite enjoy hewing and I also have seen frames with a blend of both hewn and perfectly planed timbers or rough sawn and found the contrast of styles to not be aesthetically pleasing to me. Not that it would be disastrous to mix the squaring techniques , but I do much prefer to stick to one style for the cohesiveness of this small open frame. My question is does anyone have any insight into the this as far as how I might go about acquiring the logs and what sort of pricing to expect for logs delivered to my site. I know there are a lot of factors affecting price but I wonder if anyone can send me in the right direction or if others have stories of doing a similar project of having logs delivered instead of the usual timber delivery. It seems a general price around my parts from a sawyer to get 90 cents to a dollar a board foot for pine timber. I wonder how much less I could get the raw logs for??If anyone has any ideas that would be helpful.
