I'm planning a timber frame addition to our existing, balloon-framed garage.
6x8 posts will go up adjacent to a 2x4 frame wall. The old and new structures will be on adjacent, but not connected, foundations.

Question: is it advisable to lag the new timbers to the existing frame wall
(after adding new 2x blocking to the existing wall)?

tk21769,

it sounds like you are building a lean to addition. Yes, the ridgebeam should be lagged to the 2x4 wallstuds. I don't think blocking is necessary. You should sink the lags and put a wood plug on the hole. Will look like pegs and you will not see the fasteners. Have fun.

And welcome to the TFG Forum.

Yes, it is a lean-to (shed roofed) struture. The roof ridge joins the existing garage and the roof slopes down and away from there.

So, E.H., it sounds like your approach would raise the frame against the garage,
persuade all the posts and beams up snug against the garage wall, then lag in only the ridge beam to existing studs.

The existing garage's outside wall will become the inner wall of my shop. Panelling will be added as in-fill between my timbers (because in the design -whoops - we forgot to allow for 3/4" t&g between garage wall and timbers).

Oh, I did not know you were going to use posts against the garage wall also. I think that would be overkill but okay. Unless you are talking about one post at each end of the addition as part of the new sidewall. In any case the new structure should be anchored to the existing. Posts as well as ridgebeam.
