OK, Mark - I'm happenin'. Our mill donated this to my cause...Too much ring check so was heading to it's fate in the wood heater. I saved it from a nasty death and will instead hack the crap out of it. (or sap, as it were) We got it into the truck with a forklift...so here's me, wondering how the hell I'm gonna get it out (elephant...levitation, maybe..) I figure if I drive around town with it, I'm bound to get some attention, and then I can recruit some nice, strong people to help. And offer beer, of course. Lots of beer.

Hey, mo -
Ring check is a sap deposit between the rings which can run the length of the tree and can ruin the structural integrity of a timber, as it will fall apart along that area.
Check is splits in the wood that happen on the outside surface of timbers as they dry and are not usually a structural hazard.
The white ring is just the exposed sap drying out.
I really suck at explaining things so I'll try to get some pics. There's lots more to define 'check', like star check and sap check...I'll get back to you with those and pics so you know what I'm talking about.
Cheers

OK - As promised, have pics. Check: ring check: this is the effects of ring check: sap check: sap pockets: star check: star check can get pretty bad, enough to allow moisture and rot to get into the timber through an exposed end - end seal is a good thing - but this is just regular drying at this point.(It's an off cut headed to the wood stove) Wow. What a woody thread I've made....

HA HA!! So... I come home from work (in my car) to find that my brother-in-law (who's truck it was) had decided to get the stump out on his own...(bad idea). I took one look at the damage and saw immediately how bad of an idea it really was. I was all like, What the Hell?! And he was all like, I thought I'd help you out... Now I'm really screwed... He's like, We'll just get a come-along and some jacks and we'll get it up... And I'm like, Go ahead... Did he really think those dinky little horses would hold that monster? I suppose it's the thought that counts, right... Man, this axe throwing plan is really a chore...

good lookin stump there gal. I particularily like the surreal expression on your face in that tailgate pic.... maybe you should do some target practice on the brother-out-laws truck, since he sunk yer stump.??????? you get an axe to stick on that truck, then post a pic, I'd like to see that :))

Method to get big piece of wood out of truck bed. Get going real fast in reverse and then stop...... Used to use that all the time on the farm. But that little pickup is liable to stand right up on the bumper. ; ) Maybe that was the technique your B in law used too. ; ] You could always go review the "working alone" thread they have some dynamite ideas over there that might work.

Dynamite, hey..... Nah, I think I'm gonna go with my original plan and roll the sucker down to where I wanted it in the first place. And Pegs, buddy, that's not a little truck - big honkin' Dodge Ram - it's just the stump that's big!

ok, ok, since you're such an eager beaver, I want a photo of the truck after you push it off one of those mind blowing BC cliffs.
