Ok Timber framers
I am looking for a list of tools a Timber Framer would use before power tools came to be, And then a list of tools the modern Timber Framer uses.
I know nothing about Timber Framing or the tools used so try to make the list as detaled as possible.

I've been a carpenter for 12 years doing residential and commercial work but never explored the Timber Framing Industry
This is a chance for all you veterans to help out a new guy.

Thanks

Some time ago, I got a list from the guild about what tools should be brought to a guild workshop/rendezvous.

I organized this list into layout tools, hand tools, and other categories.
Here is the list, and these would be what a modern timber framer may want to have to use:

Tools for Timber Framing
Layout tools
Calculator (construction type and or scientific)
Chalk line or ink line
Combination square
Framing square
Lumber crayons or chalk
Misc. layout tools: dividers, compass, trammel points, Big Al, Protractor square,
parallel line layout ruler, etc
Pencils carpenter and regular
Plumb bob
Stair gauges
Tape measure (16 ft, 25 ft., or 30 ft)
Utility knife
Hand tools
Awl
Block plane (sharp)
Boring machine & bits
Brace & bit (3/4" & 1" auger, and/or set)
Carving tools
Clamps (24" bar or Quik-Grip type)
Corner chisel
Crosscut & rip handsaws
Hammer (16-22 oz. smooth face)
Hand planes (rabbet, smoothing)
Levels (torpedo, 28 in. and/or 48 in.)
Outside dimension calipers
Inside dimension calipers
Sharpening files & Sharpening stone
Slick
Timber framing chisel (sharp, 1.5 in. and/or 2 in.)
Tool bag or box
Various size smaller chisels
Wooden or leather head mallet (2-3 lb.)

Jim gave you the complete list, including optional tools!
The basics you need to get started today are, as I recently learned:
Layout:
2 colors of carpenters crayons
Carpenters pencil
sharp utility knife
A high quality framing square(like the stainless Japanese one from Lee Valley-should always check squares for square)
25 foot tape measure like a Stanley
good quality machinist square (12inch) with a protractor attachment.
Cutting:
1.5 and 2 inch framing chisels
mallet
Some tool that will hog the bulk of material out of a mortise before you do the fine chisel work- Milwaukee hole hawg or other large drill and ship auger bits work
7 1/4 circ saw to make score cuts for tennon rough material removal and score cuts for cut off material removal
You'll need some tool to cut end drops all the way through using circ saw cuts as a guide - a chainsaw will work, or a timber frame large circ saw, but chainsaw is cheaper.

That's all I can think of for the basics to get you started. I didn't mention sharpening stones for your chisels. Learning to sharpen is another matter.

Thanks guys
I'm about half way there as far as the list goes, I don't have the big power tools though.

Are slicks and framing chisels the same?

Thanks

Mike D? do you rock and you hip hop?

This is what I have and it travels. Granted the bigger saws I do not have but a shop usually has them. These all fit in a tool box except for framing square, spike clamps, level, circular saw and handsaw

Mechanical Pencil
Framing Square
Tape Measure
Plumb bob
Block Plane
straight edges (usually from combination squares, they are 1" wide)
combination square
crayon
safety glasses
ear muffs
bevels (two helps for compound)
mallet (breakdownable)
chisel (1.5")
chalk lines (one blue, one white)
vice grips
hammer
mirror
handsaw (for those angles that a machine won't make)
jack plane
circular saw
spike clamps (2)
level
100' tape measure
string

travelin' light

P.S. Bessey makes spike clamps that have no equal.
P.P.S. Slicks have longer cutting edges and more mass, they are not struck with a mallet, they are pushed.
