Normally it's done by the shape of the top cross bar at the top of the sliding carriage. The carriage is the part that slides up and down the tower, holding the gear works, and handles.
If the bar is a long arc then it is a Snell, if it had a bend in it like the top of a heart or like an m then it is a James Swan & Company out of CT. If it is an all metal tower it could be an Ajax which has a hollow chuck and a hole up through the top of the tower's cross bar for extra long bit shanks. Or if it has a metal tower and two chucks it is a Boss double eagle. Or if it has a metal tower and the carriage slides up and down two round metal rods and two long rods coming from the tower top down to the seat it is a Millers Falls.

That's about it for the most common brands.....

It is probably a Swan Premium Derek, I have one as well. This isn't a great picture, but does it have the curved parts like this one? The bottom pieces on mine were warped, so I am making new ones, they are in front of the boring machine. I found another good Premium hunting in a barn yesterday.

I haven't finished it yet, so I don't know how it works. I have used a fixed Swan in the past that I like. The rack on that one automatically kicked out when it returned to the top, mine doesn't for some reason. Every boring machine seems to have its own neat little innovation. One of the ones Jim Rogers had for sale had a depth stop, and when you reached it, the head automatically returned to the upper position. Was that an Ajax Jim? I'd like to get a Boss and a Millers Falls someday.

Dave:
On most machines you have to engage the lift rack gear in order for the carriage head to pull the bit out of the timber, none that we've ever sold had it "automatic".
Some do have depth stops, but most don't; you just have to make your own out of a scrap block of wood.

My personal machine is a Swan, fixed tower machine. I got it many years ago at a very low price of $50 from a blacksmith who didn't understand the price or just wanted to give me a deal. It works great and we use it just about every workshop to bore out some mortises.

Perhaps it was one of the other dealers at the workshop, I had thought you had it. The machine had a shaft about 1 1/4" in diameter with a spiral groove on it and when the depth stop was reached it pulled itself out of the hole, one of the students bought it. One of the fixed Swans would kick the rack out when it reache the top, I don't know if it belonged to Jack or Dave though. I have not seen another Swan that does it.

We have one like you are talking about but you have to engage the lift mechanism. I have never seen one that does that automatically.
I'm not saying there isn't one, just I haven't seen it.....
